Mobile isn’t a trend, nor is it even the future, it’s the present. As of November 2016 the internet has become mobile first. With mobile usage statistics exceeding desktop browsing, it's now essential that your website is responsive and functions just as well for its mobile users as it does for those on desktop.

Responsive design is built around the concept of media queries that target specific screen sizes (viewports). Starting with mobile viewports first, you can then selectively serve additional content to those using a wider screen size as it adjusts. 

Writing out multiple media queries for various viewport sizes and ensuring cross-browser and cross-device compatibility can be a tedious task.
